ILLINOIS STATE SALES TAX HOLIDAY FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES FROM AUGUST 6-AUGUST 15, 2010

Attention all Back-to-School shoppers!   The state of Illinois will reduce the required collection of sales tax by its 5.0% portion on qualifying items under $100.00 for 10 days from August 6 through August 15, 2010.   That means a 5% reduction in the total sales tax on your purchase of qualified items.   In the city of Chicago, the sales tax rate during the holiday will be 4.75%.   Thus, you will save $5.00 for every $100.00 in purchases of qualifying items.

Qualifying clothing items include school uniforms, shorts, pants, shirts, skirts, dresses, underwear, socks, hosiery, pantyhose, slippers, shoes, and boots.

Qualifying school supplies include items such as binders, book bags, calculators, composition notebooks, notebook paper, pencils, pens, pencil boxes, scissors, crayons, erasers, glue, highlighters, index cards, and lunch boxes.

Computer and electronic supplies such as computers, flashdrives, data storage media, computer cases, cameras, cell phones, and PDA’s are not qualifying purchases under this sales tax holiday.

The Illinois Revenue site has additional information or you can call 1-800-732-8866.   Get your back-to-school shopping list together and get organized to take full advantage of this short-term Illinois retail stimulus.
