Location

Ravenswood is located on the north side of Chicago and is defined by a north boundary of Foster, Montrose to the south, Clark on the east and on the west, Kedzie. Ravenswood is officially part of the Lincoln Square Community.

Ravenswood was one of Chicago´s first planned neighborhoods with Victorian, Prairie School homes, brick bungalows, two and three flats and brick row houses situated on extra large lots make up the housing. Today, single and multi-family homes and condominiums are affordable ranging from the $190´s up to the $450´s. Many live-in rehabbers are revitalizing the neighborhood and increasing property values in the area to make it one of the highest valued markets in the city. Transportation

Ravenswood has been said to have one of the best transportation arrangements in the city although nearby Lincoln Square is the hub for transportation.  Convenience provided to downtown and the Loop via the El. The Brown Line serves the area, making stops at Montrose, Western and Damen. You will also find that buses run across several major streets in the neighborhood, the 146 Express bus to downtown, and there is a Metra station at Lawrence and Ravenswood Avenues as well.

Entertainment / Restaurants/Shopping

Lincoln Square and Andersonville are the shopping hubs of the area and there is no shortage of trendy, ethnic and traditional restaurants and bars.  The local fare includes many styles of food including Cuban, Mexican, Greek, Thai, German, Japanese, Ethiopian and Vietnamese. Old Town School of Folk Music and Davis Street Theater are among the popular entertainment and cultural venues.

Welles Park serves the area with playing fields, tennis courts, basketball courts and a playground.The field house has an indoor pool and several gyms.  Three of the main festivals held in Lincoln Square are The Old Town School of Folk Music Annual Folk and Roots Festival, Andersonville Midsommarfest and The Ravenswood Art Walk

 

History

It is a diverse and ever-changing beautiful neighborhood with tree-lined streets and landscaped parks. The area has been described as a suburb in the city and is made up of many smaller neighborhoods. Once home to a large German population, quaint shops, restaurants and outdoor café´s reflect this past.

 

In 1889, Chicago annexed the village of Ravenswood.  Poet Carl Sandburg lived in Ravenswood on Hermitage Avenue.
